2 or 4 digit codes are great for telling you where you are, but what about differentiating stores in a country that uses two or four digits for their postal codes? Not to worry, because the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has created a set of codes for national and international regions, called ISO 3166, which is used by countries around the world to represent their names and regions.
ISO 3166 is an international standard that defines codes for countries, territories, and areas. Using this standard will make it easier for deliveries to find their final destination direct to the buyer.
The ISO 3166 standard allows countries to standardize their names and symbols, and so the ISO 3166 standard for countries is a convenient way to identify countries on a map. For example, the country ‘Switzerland’ is assigned the ISO 3166 code ‘ISO 3166-1:SW’. The country ‘Sweden’ is assigned the ISO 3166 code ‘ISO 3166-2:SE’; the country ‘Finland’ is assigned the ISO 3166 code ‘ISO 3166-3:FI’. Following the ISO 3166 makes it easier for everyone including the postal system.
