Gilas Youth books ticket to quarterfinals with rout of Kazakhstan

The Gilas Pilipinas Youth squad moved on to the quarterfinals of the 2022 FIBA Under-16 Asian Championship after handily ousting Kazakhstan, 83-60, on Thursday night at the Al-Gharafa Sports Club Multi-Purpose Hall in Doha.

The young Filipino cagers pounced on their opponents in the second period, uncorking a huge 27-9 run to turn the game in their favor. Up 29-26 after the first, the Gilas Youth ended up with an 18-point bulge, 53-35, at halftime. The lead eventually reached a high of 26 as the Philippines cruised to the victory.

Bryan Competente led the Gilas Youth with 15 points, six rebounds, and four steals, while Jacob Bayla stuffed the stat-sheet with 13 points, nine boards, six steals, and three assists.

Cebuano big man Kristian Porter also got 12 points and nine boards, Alex Konov chimed in 11 points and five rebounds, while Zain Mahmood produced 10 points, six boards, and three dimes as Gilas Youth arranged a quarterfinals showdown with powerhouse Australia.

A win in that stage will not only give the Philippines a ticket to the semifinals but more importantly, a spot in the 22 FIBA Under-17 World Cup set for next month.

Daniil Severgin led the way for Kazakhstan with 24 points, nine boards, seven steals, and three assists.
