Google and research the Philippines is the foremost thing you need to do if you want to visit. Knowing first what things can insult, may be inappropriate, or maybe offensive to them will help you keep safe, especially in terms of being friendly. 

Though, you will not be thinking about how to approach it because people in the Philippines will automatically ask you to help you, especially if you look like you’re lost in the city. Avoid talking about negative things because people here hate speaking ill to others, especially if you’re talking about the country. We have different cultures and personalities here, so you might need to know the things first and apply them when you get here, and it is a must.

Checking travel advisories

The government and management are different from what we have here, so it is an excellent choice to check the travel advisories first if you want to visit. It also makes you more detailed and keen on what might happen to you during your stay; it will also help you prepare things in advance. 

Social media in the Philippines is updated and active, so it might not be a problem anymore. They will tell you everything you need to know and what will happen in advance so you can resolve it right away. It may also save you from any trouble.

Also, remember to follow all the safety precautions and protocols that every establishment in the Philippines exercises, especially now that pandemic is still around. Don’t forget to bring your mask, alcohol and extra clothes wherever you go.

Awareness of Petty Theft

This is common in different foreign countries, so you should be aware of it and be vigilant all the time. Here in the Philippines, scammers and pickpockets are also everywhere, so be mindful of your surroundings, keep your luggage and personal belongings intact to you and keep a low profile as much as possible to keep you safe all the time. 

Organize your essentials 

All the documents and requirements needed should be nicely prepared and organized. Avoid risky things, especially when roaming or strolling around the places here in the Philippines and especially when you are alone during the night or not too familiar with the area you’re in. Be very vigilant and cautious. Don’t forget to dress appropriately to blend in to avoid catcalling, especially in busy streets. 

What are the do’s and don’ts when visiting the Philippines? 

  • Don’t Disrespect Elders.

Like in any other country, In the Philippines, respect is also essential, especially for those much older than you. ‘Pagmamano’ o ‘mano’ is a way of respecting and greeting older people by saying ‘mano po’. 

  • Be respectful/mindful of your words and actions. 

People in the Philippines value the country very much. Saying bad things and negative thoughts will make them angry, leaving a wrong impression on you.

  • Do explore the country as much as you want. 

Making plans and settling your itinerary when visiting the Philippines is a must. You’ll get excited but staying one day isn’t enough for you to explore the whole country. Managing your schedule to different tourist spots is essential.

  • Do have fun talking to locals.

Filipinos are guaranteed to be friendly people. Therefore, talking to strangers is not a problem if you ever get lost; someone will surely help you without anything in return and talk to you casually and politely.

Just don’t forget to talk to them with ‘po‘ and ‘opo,’ especially to older people, if you ever get the chance to speak and be familiar with Filipino words. It is usually used to show respect.

  • Familiarize yourself with some Filipino words.

Filipinos love hearing every tourist speaking their language. So if you ever get a chance to learn even just a single word, grab it; it will make them happy. 

Here are some sample Filipino words that you will usually hear:

Salamat – means Thank you

Magkano po ito? – mean, how much is this?

Ate – To address an older sister or can also be used to address and call a woman politely.

Kuya – To address an older brother or can also be used to address and call a man politely.

  • Don’t show your valuable and personal things, especially in public places, and be very cautious and vigilant to your surroundings. Be careful of thieves, scammers, or usually called ‘budol’ and pickpockets.
  • Don’t be shy to sing even if you can’t carry a tune, especially in the videoke. Filipinos love singing and jamming, and you will have fun and never get bored with their company. 
  • To extend your patience.

If you are visiting the Philippines or plan on staying here, please be very patient in getting in lines and traffic jams, especially during rush hour, particularly in Manila, but rest assured that it does not usually happen in all areas of the Philippines.
