UST sweeps FEU to open UAAP Season 84 women’s volleyball tournament

The University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses did not take long to dispatch of Far Eastern University as they swept the Lady Tamaraws, 25-23, 25-20, 25-21, in the opening match of the UAAP Season 84 women’s volleyball tournament on Thursday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.

Eya Laure produced 14 points – 13 of which coming from attacks – along with nine excellent digs while Cams Victoria converted 11 attacks for 12 points in the victory.

“Medyo shaky yung performance namin though nanalo naman. Pero yun nga, masyadong marami yung unforced errors namin na kailangan namin i-correct pero luckily nanalo nga kami ng straight sets,” said UST head coach Kungfu Reyes.

Magi Mangulabnan made two consecutive aces while Eya Laure put on the finishing touches in a 5-1 rally that gave the Golden Tigresses their largest lead of the set at 10 points, 17-7, in the third and final set.

The Lady Tamaraws, though, persisted with Jean Asis delivering a quick hit to slice UST’s advantage to just four, 18-22. However, that proved to be it for FEU as Laure and Ysa Jimenez punched in the finishing blows.

“Kasi nga yung every error na nagagawa naman ng player is narerecover naman nila pero medyo mahaba yung balik ni FEU, almost six points yung nakuha sa amin so hindi kami nakabalik agad,” bared Reyes. “Hopefully by next game maging mas consistent na yung trabaho ng mga players para bukas naman go back to the drawing board lang kami para i-polish yung mga dapat i-polish at i-correct yung mga lapses namin.”

UST lost Imee Hernandez in the middle of the opening set with the score at 12-9 after a bad landing caused her to sprain her left ankle.
