The Rain or Shine E-Painters extended the Blackwater Bossing’s incredible losing streak to 20 games with a 92-79 win in the 2021 PBA Governors’ Cup on Thursday night at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Rain or Shine turned things around in the third quarter where they scored 31 points and held Blackwater to just 12 to take a 35-41 deficit and turn it into a 66-53 lead. Rey Nambatac was particularly deadly during that stretch as he scored 11 of his 16 points in that pivotal stretch.
Javee Mocon also had 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Henry Walker led the E-Painters in scoring with 20 points and eight rebounds
Rain or Shine head coach Chris Gavina admitted that his players were almost too eager to play in their first game, which led to nerves getting in their way.
“Siguro may gigil pa rin dahil first game pa lang. May nervous factor pero kapag nakita na namin na aggressive ang import namin, dun kami kumuha ng confidence.”
The E-Painters eventually settled down in the third with Nambatac, Mocon and Walker draining three straight trifectas in a 14-0 blast that put them in the driver’s seat for good.
Rashawn McCarthy led Blackwater with 15 markers while Barkley Ebona, an offseason acquisition from Alaska, had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Import Jaylen Bond had 13 points and 11 rebounds for Blackwater, which looked primed to snap its losing streak when it raced off to a 22-9 advantage early in the game.
