Phoenix slips past Rain or Shine for second straight win in PBA Philippine Cup

The Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters won their second game in a row as they edged the Rain or Shine E-painters, 106-102, in the PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Veteran guard RJ Jazul stepped up in the fourth period, sparking an early run in the fourth that gave Phoenix a 93-86 lead. The Fuel Masters was just ahead by one when Rain or Shine forward Jewel Ponferrada committed a technical foul for encroaching on the landing spot of Jazul as he was shooting a jumper.

Jazul made the corresponding free-throws and later, added a clutch three-pointer that sealed the victory as it gave Phoenix a 106-100 lead with just 31 seconds remaining.

The Letran product came off the bench and pumped in 25 points, including six triples.

“He puts so much emphasis on doing the work, he works a lot, and he lets do the working do the talking for him,” said Phoenix head coach Topex Robinson.

The victory evened up Phoenix’s win-loss record at 2-2, while Rain or Shine dropped to 1-3.

Phoenix star Matthew Wright added 20 points, six rebounds, six assists, and three steals, while Jason Perkins had 17 points and nine boards.

Sean Anthony and Larry Muyang chipped in 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Rey Nambatac, fresh off an injury, led the way for Rain or Shine with 27 points. Beau Belga had 15, while Mike Nieto and Andrei Caracut contributed 12 apiece.
