Magnolia ousts Meralco to barge into 2021 PBA Philippine Cup

The Magnolia Hotshots booked the first finals slot in the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup as they finally put down the resilient Meralco Bolts, 93-85, in Game Six of the semifinals on Friday night at the Don Honorio Ventura State University gym in Bacolor, Pampanga.

The Hotshots overcame every challenge the Bolts placed in front of them, including an 11-point deficit early in the game, and the disqualification of forward Calvin Abueva with 4:36 to go in the fourth quarter due to fouls.

Rome dela Rosa and Mark Barroca came up with the crucial points in crunchtime to finally blow the wind out of the sails of the Meralco squad. Up five, 85-80, dela Rosa calmly sank two freebies before Barroca made a tough layup that raised the Hotshots’ lead to nine, 89-80, with just 1:46 left in the ballgame.

Barroca and dela Rosa fired in 16 points apiece while Abueva had 11 points and six boards in a muted performance.

Raymond Almazan led Meralco with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
