Gilas Pilipinas Women bests India, finishes 7th in 2021 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup

The Gilas Pilipinas Women ended its campaign in the 2021 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup on a high note as they defeated India, 74-70, in the classification match on Friday morning at the Prince Hamza Hall in Amman, Jordan.

The Filipinas were blazing hot from beyond the arc as they sank 15 three-pointers, 11 of which came from Janine Pontejos and Khate Castillo. Those three-point makes proved to be the difference, especially in the third period when they canned five trifectas to take a 55-49 lead heading to the final period.

India persevered and pulled to within two but Castillo made two more triples to give the Philippines a 73-65 lead with just 2:28 remaining in the match.

Castillo and Pontejos each had 22 markers, the former making seven of her 10 attempts from rainbow country. Afril Bernardino also continued her fine play, racking up nine points, 11 boards, seven assists, four steals and four blocks.

The loss relegated India to Division B for the 2023 edition of this tournament.

Pushpa Senthil Kumar led India with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
