The Gilas Pilipinas men’s national basketball team will have a new head coach for the third window of the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers in Nenad Vucinic.
A former head coach of New Zealand’s national basketball team, Vucinic’s familiarity with the Tall Blacks will come in handy as the Gilas squares off with them in Auckland on June 30. They will also face off against India on July 3 at the Mall of Asia Arena. Aside from that, the Gilas will also be duking it out against South Korea in tune-up games on June 17 and 18.
Vucinic has been the assistant of former head coach Chot Reyes since February. This time, he will be overseeing a young squad filled with collegiate stars and backed by players who are coming off a campaign in Japan’s B.League.
In the Gilas pool that started training on Wednesday are holdovers Carl Tamayo, Dave Ildefonso, SJ Belangel, RJ Abarrientos, Will Navarro, Justine Baltazar, Lebron Lopez, Geo Chiu and naturalized player, Ange Kouame.
Also in the team are B. League aces Thirdy Ravena and Dwight Ramos.
The fresh faces on the Gilas are NCAA MVP Rhenz Abando, James Spencer, Kevin Quiambao, and Sherwin Concepcion.
