Alaska spoils Arwind Santos’ debut for NorthPort

The Alaska Aces spoiled Arwind Santos’ debut for the NorthPort Batang Pier as they came away with an 87-85 win in the opening game of the 2021 PBA Governors’ Cup on Wednesday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Robbie Herndon scored on a jumper with 30.1 seconds to give Alaska the lead for good, 86-85. Then, after Robert Bolick missed a three-point try, Jeron Teng was fouled and split his charities with 6.3 seconds left in the match.

With no timeouts remaining, Santos grabbed the miss, passed it to Bolick who missed a long three-pointer as time expired to give Alaska the victory.

Olu Ashaolu led Alaska with a huge double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds to go with three steals in an impressive performance that marked his return to the league. Teng finished with 19 markers, four boards and three assists, while Herndon added 13 points.

Santos, acquired by NorthPort in a surprising deal during the offseason, showed he has plenty left in the tank as he fueled the Batang Pier’s comeback attempt from 11 points down by scoring 14 of his 23 markers in the final canto. He added five rebounds, seven assists, three steals and four blocks.

Greg Slaughter and Cameron Forte each had double-doubles, the latter grabbing 15 boards and the former snatching 11. Bolick, though, had a rough shooting night as he made just two of his 14 attempts, finishing with eight points, five rebounds, and nine assists.

“This being our first game, it’s always early. I guess in any conference, you want to start off on the right foot. We will take any win we can,” said Alaska coach Jeff Cariaso after the match.
