TNT comes back from 16 points down to stymie Rain or Shine

Big man Poy Erram scored on a putback with 4.9 seconds remaining to slip past the Rain or Shine E-Painters, 89-85, in the PBA Season 47 Philippine Cup on Thursday night at the Ynares Center.

Erram’s go-ahead basket completed TNT’s incredible comeback from deficits that went as high as 16. Things looked bleak for the Tropang Giga as they still trailed by 10, 68-78, with 2:46 remaining in the fourth.

However, TNT’s veteran leader Jayson Castro came alive, hitting two straight triples in less than a minute to spark a comeback. A bucket by Troy Rosario and a layup by Castro then knotted the game at 78-all with just 24 seconds remaining. TNT even had a shot at winning the game outright in regulation after Rain or Shine’s Rey Nambatac missed his three-point try, leaving three seconds on the clock for the Tropang Giga.

Erram, though, flubbed his turnaround jumper before the fourth period buzzer to send the game to overtime.

The big man from Cagayan de Oro, however, more than made up for it with a fantastic showing in the extra session, scoring six of his 13 points in overtime, including the game-deciding basket. Castro then secured the victory by making two from the line with 2.2 ticks left in overtime.

Erram finished with a double-double as he also had 10 rebounds.

Rosario led TNT with 19 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks. Mikey Williams, back in harness after missing the start of the season due to an impasse in his contract renegotiation, shot poorly and had just 15 points on 5-of-20 shooting.

Castro and RR Pogoy had 12 markers apiece as TNT moved to 4-2.

“In the end, the players never gave up. We found a way to grind it out,” said TNT coach Chot Reyes.

Mike Nieto paced Rain or Shine with 19 points and nine boards but it wasn’t enough to keep the E-Painters from suffering their fourth loss in a row and dropping to 1-4.

Rookie Gian Mamuyac added 18 points while Leonard Santillan had 17 points and 10 boards.
