Roger Pogoy joins Gilas pool

Cebuano Roger Pogoy has joined the Gilas Pilipinas men’s national basketball team in the bubble as they gear up to compete against India and New Zealand in the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers on Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Also joining the team is versatile forward Troy Rosario. Pogoy is coming off a calf strain while Rosario is still feeling the effects of numerous injuries he incurred, most recently the finger and back injuries he suffered in the 2021 Philippine Cup. However, with just two games on the Gilas’ slate, head coach Chot Reyes must now make the decision on whether Pogoy and Rosario will see action.

The Gilas’ schedule of games was cut in half after South Korea withdrew from the competition due to a Covid-19 outbreak within their squad. This leaves the Gilas with games against India and New Zealand on Friday and Saturday.

Pogoy and Rosario’s presence bumps the pool up to 15 players. The other members of the Gilas pool include pros Robert Bolick, Poy Erram, Kelly Williams, Gab Banal, and Kib Montalbo. Also with the team are Gilas draftees Will Navarro, Tzaddy Rangel, and Jaydee Tungcab as well as B.League aces Dwight Ramos and Thirdy Ravena, Juan Gomez de Liano, LeBron Lopez, and naturalized player Angelo Kouame.
