Is the cat going up the stairs? Is the cat going down the stairs?

The photo was posted by a 9gag user and has since gotten 3,725 comments and has been picked up by a number of popular news sites. It originally appeared in the Arabic website fay3.com back in 2012. And now that it’s on 9gag and translated in English, the internet is going wild.

People who claimed that the cat is going down have offered these arguments:

The cat’s tail is up and cats raise their tails when going down to maintain balance.

“Down because generally the wood would be flat on the horizontal portion of the stairs and the stone is on the back/vertical portion of the stairs.” – User msk08

“Down for two reasons, one architectural and the other biological. First, the tiles and mosaic are traditionally facing the person coming up the stairs which they are here. And second, look at the cats tail – its facing upwards, or the opposite of the direction its moving in. If the cat were to go up the stairs, its tail would point downwards.” – User mohammedhamza07

Meanwhile, people who claimed that the cat is going UP argues:

“Given the cat and its body language, its going up, look at its front paw. It wants to tap on the next stair in order to walk ymethrical. PLUS: If the Lamp in this room is on the ceilling. The shadow fits perfectly. Also, if it would have been walking down, it wouldn´t stand so stff. It would be flatter on the ground, in order to hold balance. UP” – User lily0205

“The cat is going up the stairs. The bricks on the wall at the side of each stair is designed to hold the stair tread from slipping down. The edges on the stairs are nosings intended to prevent you from slipping off the stair. Plus, you can see the corner bricks on the side walls below that anchor the walls on either side of the staircase. This is also an outdoor staircase, not interior (afternoon sun), and is of older construction built in an area where there is not a lot of precipitation.” – User trevorjenkinson
